Leading up to TEDxManhattan 2015, we’ve asked this year’s speakers to introduce themselves by answering a few questions on the Ecocentric blog series “TEDxManhattan Heroes.”
This week’s TEDxManhattan Hero Marcel Van Ooyen is the executive director of GrowNYC, a non-profit improving quality of life through environmental programs that secure a clean and healthy environment for NYC communities. A former Legislative Director for the New York City Council, Marcel also wrote and ensured the adoption of more than 30 environmental laws in the city.
TEDxManhattan Hero Shen Tong is the founder and partner of Food-X, an international business accelerator program focused on launching food-related ventures. An organizer of the democracy movement that occupied Tiananmen Square, Shen was named one of Newsweek’s People of the Year in 1989. Following his exile to the US, Shen pursued PhDs and became an entrepreneur, founding multiple ventures over the past two decades.
TEDxManhattan Hero Kendra Kimbirauskas is the Chief Executive Officer of the Socially Responsible Agricultural Project (SRAP). In addition to her years of experience working to combat factory farming impacts on communities in the northwest and across the country, Kendra currently farms 70 acres with her husband in Oregon, where they raise heritage breeds of pigs, chickens, and turkey.
TEDxManhattan Hero Stefanie Sacks is a culinary nutritionist, author, host of the Stirring the Pot radio show, educator, speaker and consultant. Last year, she released her book What The Fork Are You Eating? An Action Plan for Your Pantry and Plate, a practical guide to cleansing your diet of offensive ingredients.
This week’s TEDxManhattan Hero Robert Graham, MD, MPH, ABIHM, FACP, is the Director of Resident Research and the Director of Integrative Health in the Department of Internal Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, NY. As a leader in the field of integrative medicine, his initiatives include the “Fare Share” cooking/nutrition program for health providers, the “Lenox CHill Initiative” yoga and meditation program for medical residents and faculty, the “Victory Greens” rooftop garden at Lenox Hill.
This week’s TEDxManhattan Hero Stephen Reily is the founder and director of Seed Capital Kentucky, a non-profit supporting Kentucky’s local food system. Stephen is focusing his philanthropic energy on bolstering the local food economy in Louisville and securing a more sustainable future for Kentucky farmers.

Nikiko will share a portrait of the human side of sustainable agriculture in her talk about three generations of her family coming home to farm.
